sensory fusion

The neurological process by which the brain combines slightly disparate images from both eyes into a single, three-dimensional percept.

Full Definition

Sensory fusion is the cortical mechanism that integrates the separate images received from each eye into a unified visual experience with depth perception. This process requires proper binocular alignment, similar image quality from both eyes, and intact neural pathways. In pediatric ophthalmology, disruption of sensory fusion during critical developmental periods can lead to suppression, abnormal retinal correspondence, or loss of stereopsis. Assessment involves tests such as the Worth 4-dot test and Bagolini striated glasses to evaluate the quality of binocular single vision.
