Barlow test
A clinical examination maneuver used to detect hip dislocation in newborns by attempting to dislocate an unstable hip.
Full Definition
The Barlow test is a provocative examination technique performed on newborns to assess hip stability by applying posterior and lateral pressure to attempt dislocation of a potentially unstable hip. Unlike the Ortolani test which reduces an already dislocated hip, the Barlow test attempts to dislocate a hip that may be unstable but currently located in the acetabulum. The test is performed with the infant supine, hips flexed to 90 degrees, and involves applying gentle pressure while abducting and adducting the hip. A positive test indicates hip instability and potential for dislocation.
