Full Definition

Hypoxic-ischemic injury refers to lung damage caused by inadequate oxygen delivery (hypoxia) combined with reduced blood flow (ischemia) to pulmonary tissues. In pediatric patients, particularly neonates, this injury can occur during perinatal complications such as birth asphyxia, severe respiratory distress, or circulatory shock. The resulting cellular damage can lead to inflammation, impaired surfactant production, increased pulmonary vascular resistance, and potentially long-term complications including bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Early recognition and intervention are crucial to minimize the extent of injury and improve outcomes.
