coxa vara

Pronunciation: KOK-sa VAR-a

Abnormal decrease in the neck-shaft angle of the femur, resulting in a more horizontal femoral neck.

Full Definition

Coxa vara is a hip deformity characterized by a decreased neck-shaft angle (normally 120-135 degrees in children) resulting in a more horizontal orientation of the femoral neck. This condition can be congenital, developmental, or acquired due to conditions like slipped capital femoral epiphysis, Perthes disease, or trauma. Imaging assessment involves measurement of the neck-shaft angle on AP hip radiographs. Severe coxa vara can lead to gait abnormalities, limb length discrepancy, and hip instability. The condition may require surgical correction depending on the degree of deformity and functional impairment.

Usage

Usage note: Always measure and report the neck-shaft angle; distinguish from coxa valga (increased angle).

In Context

  • "Bilateral AP pelvis radiographs demonstrated progressive coxa vara with a neck-shaft angle of 105 degrees." — pediatric hip imaging
  • "The patient's waddling gait was attributed to severe congenital coxa vara requiring corrective osteotomy." — orthopedic consultation
