germinal matrix hemorrhage

Bleeding in the fragile vascular region near the lateral ventricles, predominantly affecting premature infants.

Full Definition

Germinal matrix hemorrhage is a type of intracranial bleeding that occurs in the highly vascularized germinal matrix, a structure present only in premature infants. The germinal matrix is located in the subependymal region near the lateral ventricles and is particularly vulnerable to bleeding due to immature blood vessels and fluctuating cerebral blood flow. Head ultrasound is the primary imaging modality for detection and grading (Grade I-IV based on extent). This condition is a leading cause of neurodevelopmental disability in preterm infants and requires serial imaging monitoring.

Usage

Usage note: Often abbreviated as GMH in imaging reports; specify grade when present.

In Context

  • "Head ultrasound revealed Grade II germinal matrix hemorrhage with mild ventricular dilatation." — neonatal head ultrasound
  • "Serial imaging showed evolution of the germinal matrix hemorrhage without development of hydrocephalus." — follow-up imaging report
