Also written as: HO — Heterotopic ossification
Formation of mature bone and cartilage in soft tissues where it normally does not occur.
Full Definition
Heterotopic ossification (HO) refers to the pathologic formation of mature lamellar bone in soft tissues, including muscle, tendons, ligaments, and joint capsules. In pediatric patients, this condition can occur following trauma, burns, prolonged immobilization, or certain neurologic conditions. Imaging shows progressive mineralization in soft tissues that eventually develops the radiographic appearance of mature cortical bone. Early recognition is important for treatment planning and prevention of joint contractures.
