Gottron's papules are characteristic cutaneous manifestations of dermatomyositis, appearing as violaceous or erythematous, slightly raised papules over the metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joints of the hands. These lesions may also occur over the elbows, knees, and malleoli. Named after German dermatologist Heinrich Gottron, these papules are considered pathognomonic for dermatomyositis and are part of the classification criteria for the disease. In pediatric patients, their presence along with muscle weakness strongly suggests juvenile dermatomyositis and necessitates comprehensive evaluation for systemic involvement.
