Full Definition

Localized scleroderma, also known as morphea, is an autoimmune connective tissue disease that primarily affects children and adolescents, causing localized areas of skin hardening and thickening. Unlike systemic sclerosis, it does not involve internal organs but can cause significant cosmetic and functional impairment, particularly when it affects the face (en coup de sabre) or limbs (linear scleroderma). The condition may be associated with joint contractures, limb length discrepancies, and facial hemiatrophy. Treatment typically involves immunosuppressive therapy with methotrexate and corticosteroids to prevent progression and minimize long-term sequelae.
