Lipodystrophy in pediatric rheumatology refers to the partial or complete loss of subcutaneous fat tissue, most commonly associated with juvenile dermatomyositis. This complication can be localized to areas of previous inflammation or calcinosis, or may be more generalized. Lipodystrophy can result in significant cosmetic concerns and may indicate more severe or chronic disease. It can also be associated with metabolic complications including insulin resistance and dyslipidemia.
