Nailfold capillaroscopy is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that uses magnification and specialized lighting to visualize the microcirculation in the nailfold area. This procedure is particularly valuable in pediatric rheumatology for distinguishing primary from secondary Raynaud's phenomenon and for monitoring disease progression in connective tissue disorders. Abnormal findings include capillary loop dilation, hemorrhages, loss of capillaries, and architectural disarray. The technique is especially useful in the evaluation of juvenile systemic sclerosis, mixed connective tissue disease, and juvenile dermatomyositis, where characteristic patterns can aid in diagnosis and prognosis.
