polyarticular RF-negative

Also written as: RF — rheumatoid factor

A JIA subtype affecting five or more joints with negative rheumatoid factor, typically having better prognosis than RF-positive disease.

Full Definition

Polyarticular rheumatoid factor-negative juvenile idiopathic arthritis is characterized by involvement of five or more joints during the first six months of disease, with negative testing for rheumatoid factor. This subtype affects children of all ages with a female predominance and typically involves both large and small joints symmetrically. The disease pattern can resemble adult rheumatoid arthritis but generally has a more favorable long-term prognosis. Patients may have positive antinuclear antibodies and require screening for chronic anterior uveitis. Treatment often requires disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, with methotrexate being the first-line conventional DMARD.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify both polyarticular pattern and RF status for accurate subtype classification.
