Abnormal calcium and phosphate deposits in subcutaneous tissues, a potential complication of juvenile inflammatory myopathy.

Full Definition

Subcutaneous calcinosis refers to the pathological deposition of calcium phosphate crystals in the subcutaneous tissue and sometimes in muscle fascia or tendons. In pediatric rheumatology, this complication occurs most commonly in children with juvenile dermatomyositis, particularly in those with delayed diagnosis, inadequate treatment, or certain genetic factors. The deposits can range from small, asymptomatic nodules to large, painful masses that may ulcerate through the skin and become infected. Calcinosis typically develops months to years after disease onset and can be progressive, causing significant functional impairment and cosmetic concerns. Treatment is challenging and may include calcium channel blockers, bisphosphonates, or surgical removal in severe cases.
