Hypospadias
Pronunciation: hahy-poh-SPAY-dee-uhs
Congenital condition where the urethral opening is located on the underside of the penis rather than at the tip.
Full Definition
Hypospadias is one of the most common congenital anomalies in boys, occurring when the urethral meatus opens on the ventral surface of the penis instead of at the glans tip. The condition may be associated with chordee (downward curvature of the penis) and incomplete foreskin development. Severity ranges from glandular (near the tip) to perineal (severe cases). Surgical repair, typically performed between 6-18 months of age, aims to create a straight penis with a normally positioned meatus.
Usage
Usage note: Classified by location of meatus; avoid circumcision before repair as foreskin may be needed.
