Morgagni Hernia
Pronunciation: mor-GAG-nee
Rare type of congenital diaphragmatic hernia occurring through the anterior medial diaphragmatic defect, typically right-sided.
Full Definition
Morgagni hernia is a rare form of congenital diaphragmatic hernia occurring through the foramen of Morgagni, an anterior medial diaphragmatic defect between the sternal and costal attachments of the diaphragm. This type accounts for only 2-5% of all congenital diaphragmatic hernias and occurs predominantly on the right side. Unlike Bochdalek hernias, Morgagni hernias are often asymptomatic in neonates and may present later in childhood or even adulthood with respiratory symptoms or bowel obstruction. The herniated contents typically include bowel loops and occasionally liver or omentum. Surgical repair can often be performed through a minimally invasive approach given the anterior location and typically smaller defect size compared to posterolateral hernias.
Usage
Usage note: Named after Italian anatomist Giovanni Battista Morgagni.
