Orchiopexy

Surgical fixation of an undescended testis into the scrotum, typically performed between 6-18 months of age to preserve fertility.

Full Definition

Orchiopexy is the surgical procedure to mobilize and fix an undescended testis in the scrotum. The operation involves identification and division of processus vaginalis, mobilization of the spermatic cord, and creation of a scrotal pouch for testicular placement. The procedure should ideally be performed between 6-18 months of age to optimize fertility outcomes and reduce malignancy risk. Laparoscopic approaches may be used for high intra-abdominal testes, sometimes requiring staged procedures. Complications include testicular atrophy, recurrent undescent, and rarely, injury to the vas deferens.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify whether single-stage or staged procedure and document testis viability post-operatively.
