crossed renal ectopia

Congenital condition where one kidney crosses to the opposite side, with or without fusion to the normally positioned kidney.

Full Definition

Crossed renal ectopia occurs when a kidney migrates across the midline during embryological development, positioning itself on the opposite side from its normal location. The condition may involve fusion with the normally positioned kidney or exist as separate, unfused organs. Most cases involve the left kidney crossing to the right side. Associated complications can include ureteropelvic junction obstruction, vesicoureteral reflux, and increased risk of traumatic injury. Diagnosis is typically made through imaging studies including ultrasound and CT. Surgical intervention is only required when complications develop.
