Reflux nephropathy represents permanent kidney damage caused by the combination of vesicoureteral reflux and recurrent urinary tract infections. The condition involves scarring of renal parenchyma, particularly affecting the renal cortex and leading to reduced kidney function. Early detection and management of reflux can prevent progression to nephropathy, making it a critical concern in pediatric urology. The term encompasses both the acute inflammatory changes and chronic scarring patterns visible on imaging. Reflux nephropathy may progress to chronic kidney disease and hypertension in severe cases.
