renal dysplasia

Abnormal kidney development characterized by disorganized tissue containing cysts and primitive structures.

Full Definition

Renal dysplasia is a congenital condition where normal kidney development is disrupted, resulting in abnormal tissue architecture with cystic spaces, primitive ducts, and sometimes cartilage. This condition can affect one or both kidneys and ranges from mild focal areas to complete replacement of normal kidney tissue. In pediatric urology, it's often associated with severe vesicoureteral reflux or obstructive uropathy and may require surgical intervention or long-term monitoring.
