VCUG
Pronunciation: V-C-U-G
Also written as: VCUG — voiding cystourethrogram
Voiding cystourethrogram, an imaging study to evaluate bladder function and detect reflux.
Full Definition
VCUG (voiding cystourethrogram) is a specialized radiological examination that evaluates the anatomy and function of the bladder and urethra during both filling and voiding phases. The procedure involves catheterization of the bladder, instillation of contrast material, and fluoroscopic imaging during bladder filling and subsequent voiding. VCUG is the gold standard for diagnosing and grading vesicoureteral reflux and is also used to evaluate posterior urethral valves, bladder diverticula, and other urological abnormalities. The study provides dynamic information about voiding patterns and can identify anatomical abnormalities that static imaging cannot detect. Despite being invasive and involving radiation exposure, VCUG remains essential in pediatric urological evaluation.
