voiding cystogram

Radiological study using contrast material to visualize the bladder during filling and voiding phases to detect abnormalities.

Full Definition

A fluoroscopic imaging study that involves filling the bladder with contrast material through a catheter and obtaining images during both the filling and voiding phases. This diagnostic test evaluates bladder anatomy, capacity, and function while identifying vesicoureteral reflux, bladder outlet obstruction, or anatomical abnormalities. The study provides dynamic information about lower urinary tract function that static imaging cannot capture. In pediatric patients, the procedure requires careful attention to radiation exposure and may be performed with cyclic voiding to minimize discomfort and improve diagnostic yield.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from VCUG (voiding cystourethrogram) which specifically includes urethral imaging.

In Context

  • "The voiding cystogram revealed bilateral grade III vesicoureteral reflux requiring surgical intervention." — Imaging report
  • "Follow-up voiding cystogram confirmed resolution of reflux after reimplantation surgery." — Post-operative evaluation
