voiding dysfunction

Abnormal patterns of bladder filling and/or emptying that may result in urinary incontinence, urinary tract infections, or vesicoureteral reflux.

Full Definition

Voiding dysfunction encompasses a spectrum of abnormal bladder behaviors in children, including dysfunctional voiding (failure to relax the external urethral sphincter during voiding), detrusor overactivity, underactive bladder, and various combinations thereof. These conditions may present with urinary incontinence, urgency, frequency, recurrent urinary tract infections, or secondary vesicoureteral reflux. Evaluation typically includes detailed voiding history, physical examination, uroflowmetry, and post-void residual measurement. Treatment may involve behavioral modification, biofeedback, anticholinergic medications, or intermittent catheterization depending on the underlying pathophysiology.

Usage

Usage note: Broader term than 'dysfunctional voiding'; encompasses multiple abnormal voiding patterns.
