intrauterine pressure catheter

A monitoring device inserted into the uterine cavity to measure the strength and frequency of uterine contractions. Abbreviated as IUPC in clinical documentation.

Full Definition

A thin, flexible catheter inserted through the cervix into the amniotic cavity to provide precise measurement of intrauterine pressure during labor contractions. The intrauterine pressure catheter (IUPC) measures both the baseline uterine tone and the amplitude of contractions in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). This internal monitoring method is more accurate than external tocodynamometry and is indicated when precise contraction assessment is needed, such as in cases of suspected uterine rupture, evaluation of labor progress, or when external monitoring is inadequate. Placement requires ruptured membranes and adequate cervical dilation. Risks include infection, placental abruption, and uterine perforation.
