Involution

The return of the uterus to its non-pregnant size and condition after delivery.

Full Definition

Uterine involution is the physiological process by which the uterus returns to its pre-pregnancy size, position, and condition following delivery. This process typically takes 6-8 weeks and involves contraction of uterine muscle fibers, reduction in blood supply, and elimination of excess tissue. The fundus can be palpated descending approximately 1 cm per day until it is no longer palpable above the pubic symphysis. Breastfeeding accelerates involution through oxytocin release. Delayed or incomplete involution may indicate retained placental fragments or infection.
