malpresentation

Any fetal presentation other than vertex (head-down) at term.

Full Definition

An abnormal fetal presentation at the time of delivery, including breech (buttocks or feet first), transverse lie (shoulder presentation), face presentation, or brow presentation. Malpresentation occurs in approximately 5% of all deliveries and may increase risks for both mother and baby, potentially requiring cesarean delivery or assisted vaginal delivery. Early recognition through Leopold maneuvers, ultrasound, or vaginal examination is crucial for appropriate delivery planning and ensuring adequate resources are available.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from 'malposition' which refers to abnormal positioning of a normally presenting part.

In Context
