A pharmaceutical preparation combining ergometrine maleate and oxytocin (Syntocinon), administered intramuscularly for active management of the third stage of labor. Syntometrine causes powerful uterine contractions that help deliver the placenta and compress uterine blood vessels to prevent excessive bleeding. It is contraindicated in cases of hypertension, heart disease, or when the baby has not yet been delivered, as it can cause uterine tetany. The combination provides both the rapid onset of oxytocin and the sustained action of ergometrine.
