Enamel Matrix Derivative

A biologic agent derived from porcine foetal enamel proteins, primarily amelogenins, used in periodontal regenerative surgery to promote cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone formation.

Full Definition

Enamel matrix derivative (EMD), commercially available as Emdogain®, is applied to conditioned root surfaces during regenerative flap surgery to stimulate the formation of a new attachment apparatus. Its proposed mechanism mimics the natural process of tooth root development, in which enamel matrix proteins guide cementogenesis. EMD is frequently used alone or in combination with bone grafts and barrier membranes. Editors should be aware that 'Emdogain' is a proprietary trade name and should be accompanied by the generic descriptor 'enamel matrix derivative' on first use in scientific papers. In manuscripts, 'EMD' is the standard abbreviation; the trade name should be italicised or written in title case per the journal's style guide for proprietary names.
