ROM

Also written as: ROM — Range of Motion

Abbreviation for Range of Motion; the measurable degree of movement available at a joint, used extensively in PM&R assessment and progress documentation.

Full Definition

ROM (Range of Motion) quantifies the arc of movement at a joint, measured in degrees using a goniometer or inclinometer. In PM&R documentation, ROM values are recorded for baseline assessment, goal-setting, and outcome measurement. Active ROM (AROM) refers to movement generated by the patient's own musculature; passive ROM (PROM) refers to movement produced by an external force. Editors must ensure the abbreviation is expanded on first use in formal reports and that AROM and PROM are clearly distinguished when both appear in a document. The abbreviation is always rendered in full capitals without periods.

Usage

Usage note: Expand on first use in formal documents. When both AROM and PROM are discussed, ensure each is separately defined and clearly labeled throughout. Do not confuse with 'ROM' in other contexts (e.g., Read-Only Memory in technology documents).

In Context

  • "ROM measurements at the glenohumeral joint showed a 20-degree deficit in external rotation compared with the contralateral side." — Physical therapy evaluation report
  • "Goals included restoration of full ROM at the knee within eight weeks of surgery." — Rehabilitation plan document
