Also written as: BBS — Berg Balance Scale

A standardized 14-item assessment tool used to evaluate balance and fall risk in patients.

Full Definition

The Berg Balance Scale (BBS) is a widely used clinical assessment tool consisting of 14 tasks that evaluate static and dynamic balance abilities. Each item is scored from 0 to 4 points, with a maximum total score of 56 points. Scores below 45 indicate a higher fall risk and need for balance interventions. The assessment is commonly used in geriatric, neurological, and orthopedic rehabilitation settings to track progress and guide treatment planning.

Usage

Usage note: Always include the numerical score when documenting BBS results for insurance and outcome tracking.
