Closed-Chain Exercise

Also written as: CKC — Closed Kinetic Chain

Exercise performed with the distal segment fixed or in contact with a stable surface.

Full Definition

Closed-chain exercises are performed when the distal segment of the kinetic chain is fixed or in contact with an immovable surface, such as the foot being planted on the ground during a squat. This creates a closed kinetic chain where movement at one joint affects all other joints in the chain. These exercises typically involve multiple joints and muscle groups working together, promoting functional movement patterns, joint stability, and proprioceptive feedback. Common examples include squats, lunges, push-ups, and step-ups.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish clearly from open-chain exercises in documentation; specify the functional relevance.
