Cognitive Load Theory describes the mental effort required to process information during learning, particularly relevant in motor skill acquisition during physical therapy. The theory identifies three types of cognitive load: intrinsic (inherent difficulty of the task), extraneous (poor instructional design), and germane (processing that contributes to learning). Understanding cognitive load helps therapists structure interventions to optimize learning while preventing mental overload, especially important when working with neurological patients or teaching complex movement patterns.
