An advancement flap is a type of local flap reconstruction where tissue adjacent to a defect is moved forward in a linear fashion to provide coverage. The flap maintains its original blood supply through its base while being advanced to fill the defect. This technique is commonly used in facial reconstruction, scalp coverage, and other areas where local tissue availability permits. Proper planning ensures adequate mobility while maintaining flap viability and achieving optimal aesthetic results.
