Capsular contracture is a complication that occurs when scar tissue (capsule) forms around a breast implant and subsequently contracts, causing the implant to feel firm, appear distorted, or cause pain. All implants develop a natural fibrous capsule as part of the healing process, but in capsular contracture, this capsule becomes thick and tight. The condition is graded using the Baker classification system from Grade I (normal) to Grade IV (severe with pain and distortion). Risk factors include bacterial contamination, hematoma, implant rupture, and genetic predisposition. Treatment typically requires capsulectomy or capsulotomy, often with implant replacement.
