Capsulotomy involves making strategic incisions in the fibrous capsule that naturally forms around implanted materials, most commonly breast implants. This procedure is performed to treat capsular contracture, a condition where excessive scar tissue formation causes firmness, distortion, or pain around an implant. The technique can be performed as an open surgical procedure or, in some cases, through closed manipulation, though the latter carries risks of implant rupture and is less commonly performed.
