FTSG

Also written as: FTSG — Full-Thickness Skin Graft

Full-thickness skin graft containing both epidermis and complete dermis.

Full Definition

A full-thickness skin graft (FTSG) includes the entire epidermis and dermis, providing superior color match, texture, and resistance to contracture compared to split-thickness grafts. FTSGs are commonly used in facial reconstruction, hand surgery, and areas requiring optimal aesthetic outcomes. The graft requires a well-vascularized recipient bed and careful postoperative management to ensure successful take. Donor sites typically require primary closure or coverage with another graft.

Usage

Usage note: Contrast with STSG (split-thickness skin graft) which includes only partial dermis.

In Context

  • "An FTSG from the postauricular region provided excellent color match for the nasal defect." — operative report
  • "The FTSG showed complete take at the one-week follow-up appointment." — postoperative note
