biophysical profile

Comprehensive fetal assessment combining ultrasound parameters and heart rate monitoring to evaluate fetal well-being.

Full Definition

The biophysical profile (BPP) is a prenatal assessment tool that evaluates fetal well-being through five parameters: fetal heart rate reactivity (non-stress test), fetal breathing movements, gross body movements, fetal tone, and amniotic fluid volume. Each parameter is scored as either 0 or 2 points, with a maximum score of 10 indicating optimal fetal condition. The test is typically performed in high-risk pregnancies or when fetal compromise is suspected, usually after 32 weeks gestation. A modified BPP combines the non-stress test with amniotic fluid assessment only. Lower scores may indicate fetal hypoxia or acidosis and may prompt immediate delivery depending on gestational age and clinical circumstances.

Usage

Usage note: Two words when spelled out; commonly abbreviated as BPP in clinical practice.
