Full Definition

First trimester screening (FTS) is a combined screening test performed between 10-14 weeks of pregnancy to assess the risk of chromosomal abnormalities, particularly Down syndrome and other trisomies. The screening incorporates maternal age as a risk factor, ultrasound measurements including nuchal translucency and crown-rump length, and maternal serum biochemical markers (free beta-hCG and PAPP-A). The results are combined using statistical algorithms to generate a personalized risk assessment. FTS has largely replaced second trimester screening in many healthcare systems due to its earlier timing and improved detection rates when combined with appropriate counseling and follow-up testing options.
