Pronunciation: SPY-nuh BIF-ih-duh
Neural tube defect where spinal cord and vertebrae fail to develop properly.
Full Definition
A congenital birth defect classified as a neural tube defect, occurring when the neural tube fails to close completely during early pregnancy, typically by the 28th day after conception. The condition results in incomplete development of the spinal cord, vertebrae, and surrounding tissues. Spina bifida can range from mild (spina bifida occulta) to severe forms (myelomeningocele) that may cause paralysis and other complications. It can be detected through prenatal screening via elevated AFP levels and confirmed by ultrasound.
