Stuck twin syndrome
Severe form of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome where the donor twin becomes trapped against the uterine wall.
Full Definition
Stuck twin syndrome is an extreme manifestation of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome in monochorionic twin pregnancies. The donor twin becomes severely oligohydramniotic and appears 'stuck' or pressed against the uterine wall, unable to move freely due to the severely reduced amniotic fluid. Meanwhile, the recipient twin develops polyhydramnios. This condition requires urgent intervention, typically laser ablation of placental vascular connections, to prevent fetal loss and severe neurological complications.
