metabolic syndrome
Also written as: MetS — metabolic syndrome
A cluster of metabolic abnormalities that increase cardiovascular disease risk.
Full Definition
Metabolic syndrome is a constellation of interconnected physiological, biochemical, clinical, and metabolic factors that directly increase the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. The syndrome is typically diagnosed when three or more of the following are present: abdominal obesity, elevated triglycerides, reduced HDL cholesterol, elevated blood pressure, and elevated fasting glucose. Recognition of metabolic syndrome helps identify patients who may benefit from intensive lifestyle intervention and closer monitoring.
