Full Definition

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a heme-containing enzyme released by activated neutrophils and monocytes that catalyzes the formation of hypochlorous acid and other oxidants from hydrogen peroxide. In the context of atherosclerosis, MPO contributes to oxidative modification of lipoproteins, endothelial dysfunction, and plaque instability. Elevated plasma MPO levels have been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events, particularly in patients with acute coronary syndromes. While MPO shows promise as a biomarker for cardiovascular risk stratification and plaque vulnerability assessment, its clinical application in routine preventive cardiology practice remains under investigation.
