myocardial bridge

Congenital variant where epicardial coronary artery segments tunnel through myocardium rather than remaining on surface.

Full Definition

A myocardial bridge is a congenital coronary anomaly in which a segment of an epicardial coronary artery takes an intramyocardial course, becoming 'bridged' by overlying myocardial tissue. The most commonly affected vessel is the left anterior descending artery. During systole, the bridged segment may be compressed, potentially causing ischemia, though most bridges are clinically benign. However, some patients may experience angina, especially during exercise, and rarely, myocardial bridging can be associated with sudden cardiac death, particularly in athletes. Recognition of myocardial bridging is important for appropriate risk stratification and management decisions.

Usage

Usage note: Specify affected vessel and degree of systolic compression when documented.

In Context

  • "Coronary angiography revealed a myocardial bridge affecting the mid-LAD with systolic compression." — cardiac catheterization report
  • "The patient's exercise-induced symptoms were attributed to the previously identified myocardial bridge." — cardiology consultation note
