Bench Alignment

The initial static positioning of prosthetic components relative to one another and to the socket, performed on a workbench before the device is fitted to the patient.

Bench alignment is the first of three sequential alignment stages in prosthetic fabrication, preceding static alignment and dynamic alignment. During bench alignment, the prosthetist uses anatomical landmarks, manufacturer guidelines, and established biomechanical principles to position the socket, structural components, and foot or terminal device in a baseline configuration that approximates optimal function. The angles and distances set at this stage are recorded and serve as the reference point for all subsequent adjustments. In editorial contexts, editors must ensure the correct sequence is observed—bench, static, dynamic—and must not conflate bench alignment with 'static alignment,' which involves the patient standing and bearing weight. These distinctions are critical in prosthetic fabrication manuals, training curricula, and clinical competency documentation.

Usage note: Always present in sequence: bench alignment → static alignment → dynamic alignment. Reversing or omitting stages in procedural documentation constitutes a significant editorial error.
