Dynamic Response Foot

A prosthetic foot designed with a flexible keel or carbon-fibre blade that stores and returns energy during the gait cycle, mimicking the spring-like function of the human ankle.

Dynamic response feet (also called energy-storing-and-returning feet or ESAR feet) use flexible composite materials—most commonly carbon fibre—to absorb energy during the loading phase of gait and release it during push-off, improving walking efficiency and reducing metabolic cost. They are prescribed for active ambulators and are distinguished from solid-ankle cushion-heel (SACH) feet, which provide no energy return. Clinical documents, outcome assessments, and L-code billing records will reference specific foot categories. Editors must not conflate 'dynamic response foot' with the broader category 'energy-return foot', as the former is a specific subcategory. Hyphenation as an attributive modifier is standard: dynamic-response foot component.
