Dynamic response feet (also called energy-storing-and-returning feet or ESAR feet) use flexible composite materials—most commonly carbon fibre—to absorb energy during the loading phase of gait and release it during push-off, improving walking efficiency and reducing metabolic cost. They are prescribed for active ambulators and are distinguished from solid-ankle cushion-heel (SACH) feet, which provide no energy return.
