A suspension method that uses a powered pump to create and maintain a negative-pressure environment between the liner and socket wall, minimising pistoning and limb volume fluctuation.

Full Definition

Elevated vacuum suspension (EVS) employs an electronic or mechanical pump to draw air from the socket interface, generating pressures typically below −50 mmHg to hold the residual limb firmly within the socket. Unlike passive atmospheric suspension, EVS actively compensates for volume changes throughout the day, which is particularly beneficial for patients with significant residual limb volume fluctuation. Editors should distinguish EVS from standard pin-lock or lanyard suspension and from passive seal-in liners. The abbreviation EVS appears in insurance prior-authorisation forms, Medicare LCD documentation, and peer-reviewed outcome studies, and should be expanded on first use.

Usage note: Do not conflate with VASS (vacuum-assisted socket system), which denotes an older, lower-pressure variant. Clarify which system is intended when editing clinical justification letters.
