Exoskeletal Prosthesis

A prosthetic limb design in which the structural load-bearing support is provided by a hard outer shell, typically made from rigid laminate or thermoplastic, rather than an internal frame.

Full Definition

An exoskeletal prosthesis, also called a 'crustacean' or 'conventional' prosthesis, derives its structural integrity from a shaped outer shell of hard plastic or laminate material that simultaneously provides the limb's shape, cosmetic appearance, and biomechanical support. This contrasts with endoskeletal (modular) prostheses, which use an internal pylon or tubular structure covered by a soft cosmetic foam cover. Exoskeletal designs are more durable and easier to maintain in low-resource settings but offer fewer adjustment options. Editors should hyphenate 'exoskeletal' as shown and distinguish the term clearly from 'endoskeletal.'

Usage note: Do not confuse with 'endoskeletal prosthesis.' The prefix 'exo-' (outside) versus 'endo-' (inside) distinguishes where the structural element is located. Both are valid contemporary designs.
