An exoskeletal prosthesis, also called a 'crustacean' or 'conventional' prosthesis, derives its structural integrity from a shaped outer shell of hard plastic or laminate material that simultaneously provides the limb's shape, cosmetic appearance, and biomechanical support. This contrasts with endoskeletal (modular) prostheses, which use an internal pylon or tubular structure covered by a soft cosmetic foam cover. Exoskeletal designs are more durable and easier to maintain in low-resource settings but offer fewer adjustment options.
