Energy-Return Foot

A prosthetic foot design that stores kinetic energy during loading (heel strike and mid-stance) and releases it during push-off to improve gait efficiency.

Full Definition

Energy-return prosthetic feet, also called dynamic-response feet or carbon-fibre spring feet, use flexible keel structures—most commonly carbon-fibre composites—to store elastic strain energy during the stance phase and return it as propulsive force at terminal stance. This contrasts with conventional solid-ankle cushioned-heel (SACH) feet, which absorb rather than return energy. Editors should note that 'energy-return,' 'dynamic-response,' and 'elastic-response' are often used interchangeably in lay and semi-clinical writing, but technical documents may distinguish them. Hyphenation of 'energy-return' as a compound modifier is standard.
