The ischial containment socket (sometimes abbreviated ICS) is a transfemoral socket design developed to improve control and stability by capturing the ischial tuberosity, ramus, and portions of the gluteal muscle mass within the proximal brim. This contrasts with the older quadrilateral socket design, in which the ischium rests on a posterior shelf outside the socket walls. The ischial containment design is widely regarded as the contemporary standard for above-knee prosthetic fitting and is referenced extensively in outcomes literature.
