Suspension System

The mechanism or combination of mechanisms that secures a prosthesis to the residual limb and prevents it from slipping or falling off during activity.

A suspension system encompasses all components and methods used to maintain the attachment of a prosthesis to the residual limb throughout the wearer's range of motion. Common suspension strategies include pin-lock liners, vacuum-assisted socket systems (VASS), suction sockets, lanyard systems, and auxiliary suspension sleeves. The choice of suspension system is influenced by activity level, residual limb volume stability, skin condition, and patient preference.
