subsyndromal symptoms

Psychiatric symptoms that are present but do not meet the full diagnostic criteria for a specific disorder.

Full Definition

Subsyndromal symptoms refer to clinical manifestations that fall below the threshold for formal psychiatric diagnosis but still represent clinically meaningful distress or impairment. These symptoms may include fewer symptoms than required for diagnosis, symptoms of insufficient severity or duration, or incomplete symptom clusters. In psychiatric research, subsyndromal presentations are important because they often predict future episodes, cause significant functional impairment, and may benefit from early intervention. Examples include subsyndromal depression, subclinical anxiety, or attenuated psychotic symptoms that may indicate prodromal states.

Usage

Usage note: May be written as one word or hyphenated; distinguish from residual or prodromal symptoms.
