grandiosity

An exaggerated sense of self-importance, power, knowledge, or identity.

Full Definition

Grandiosity refers to an inflated sense of self-worth that may manifest as beliefs about having special powers, talents, or importance that are clearly unrealistic given the person's actual circumstances. This symptom can range from mild overconfidence to frank delusions of grandeur. Grandiosity is commonly observed in manic episodes of bipolar disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, and certain psychotic conditions. In clinical documentation, it's important to assess whether grandiose beliefs are mood-congruent, delusional in intensity, or within the range of normal self-confidence.

Usage

Usage note: Assess for delusional vs. non-delusional grandiosity and relationship to mood state.

In Context

  • "The patient's grandiosity was evident in his belief that he could solve the hospital's financial problems." — manic episode documentation
